Lithuania Transportation Guide

Travelling in Lithuania is a comparatively convenient option, be it by road, train, bus or taxi. Just follow the rules and you are bound to have fond memories of your Lithuanian trip.

Getting to Lithuania

Air Transport

Lithuanian Airlines (LAL) and Air Lithuania are Lithuania's National Airlines. There are three international airports: Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.

Vilnius International Airport

Vilnius International Airport has just undergone major reconstruction with the new passenger terminal being officially opened in October 2007. It is conveniently located just 7km or 15 minutes by car to the city centre. There are 12 airlines operating out of the airport providing regular flights both domestically and internationally. Chartered flights also operate out of Vilnius International Airport.

Facilities at the airport include: Banks and ATM's, 24 hour medical department, information desk, newsstand and flower shop, car rental agencies, cafes and restaurants, vending machines, baggage storage facilities, parking, internet connection areas and telephones.

Palanga Airport

Located in the west Lithuania, Palanga is a small regional airport. Regular flights operate to Copenhagen and Amsterdam. Connections to various other European cities are available via Copenhagan. The airport has been in operation since 1937 and is currently undergoing refurbishments. The airport is conveniently located just 10 minutes from Palanga city centre and half an hour from Klaipeda.

Kaunas Airport

Kaunas Airport acquired international status in 1991. Located just 13kms from Kaunas city centre, the airport is well connected to the main rail lines, motorways and river port. Regular flight destinations from Kaunas include: Vaxjo, Frankfurt, London, Liverpool, Shannon, Dublin and Glasgow. Airlines operating out of Kaunas are Ryanair, DOT LT and Stockholmsplanet.

Airport facilities include: Customer service desks, café and bar, duty free shopping, Bank and ATM, car rental agencies, taxi stands, long and short term parking, VIP business lounge.

Flights to Lithuania

By Road

Lithuania boasts of an effective transport network connecting it with its neighbouring states. All kinds of roads are encountered here, from two to four- lane highways connecting important cities, to small roads navigating the countryside. Of course, one has to be careful when driving in Lithuania, be aware of traffic rule violations, speeding vehicles, and rash driving by novices. Overtaking vehicles are another constant menace you will have to cope with. Within the town the speed limit is 50 km/hr, while out of town the speed limit is 90 km/hr. Remember, driving is on the right-hand side and, yes, with seatbelts on. Drunk driving is strictly forbidden and punishable. Driving at night is not advisable.

By Train

While Lithuania has an efficient rail network, Vilnius is the main connecting point for its rail service. Kaunas, Siauliai and Klaipeda are well connected from Vilnius. Passenger trains running twice a day connect Vilnius with the Baltic coast. The popular lake district of the National Park is connected to Vilnius by suburban trains going to Ignalina. In the same way, people can reach the ancient Trakai castle using the suburban train. Palanga, the important resort on the Baltic coast, does not have a stop, though, but you can get off at Kretinga or Klaipeda station and then take a bus that is equally fast.

By Bus

In spite of a professional and well-developed rail network, it is the bus service that is more popular in Lithuania for its frequent and quick service in towns and villages. The bus services from Kautra connect Kaunas to most of the major Lithuanian cities. Buses comprise of the common buses, mini buses and trolley buses. The charm of the bus service in Lithuania is that tickets are sold not according to their availability but according to the number of passengers, and more buses are assigned if needed. Tickets can be bought from stalls or from the bus drivers themselves, although the ones purchased from the drivers are costly as well as risky. If you have bought a ticket in advance, remember to board the bus using the middle door and stamp the ticket with the punches available. If you choose to buy a ticket aboard the bus, carry the correct change. Ticketless travel is bound to attract a fine.

Do remember that you have to get off the bus through the middle door.

By Taxi

Taxis are the best way to travel in Lithuania, as they are comparatively cheaper when compared to Western Europe. Taxis run on meters. They can be booked by phone and you can travel the countryside in a taxi. Of course, a phone taxi is always safer than hailing one on the road, especially at airports or bus stations. Take a long ride along the scenic route for a small extra cost.

Tip: It is customary to give a small tip to the driver when you reach your destination.

By Water

The main sea port in Lithuania is Klaipeda. The northernmost ice-free port on the Baltic Seas Eastern coast, it is well connected by trade routes with foreign ports. Open 24 hours, 7 days a week all year round the port is used for the transportation of Cargo as well as passengers.

There are ferry services to Denmark, Kaliningrad (Russian Federation), Germany, Poland and Sweden.

There is also a cruise ship terminal. There are services to Karlshamm in Sweden; Aarhus and Aabenraa in Denmark; and to Kiel and Sassnitz in Germany.
